Microsoft launches Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 tablets

Microsoft reveals new tablets

Microsoft launched the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 at a press conference in New York on Monday. Surface general manager Panos Panay showed off the new Windows tablets and took the audience through their improved features.
The new version of the Surface Pro 2 is the same size and weight as the original model, but the hardware has been upgraded to improve the performance by 20 per cent, making it faster than 95 per cent of laptops on the market. The battery also lasts significantly longer than its predecessor's, according to Microsoft.

Panos Panay introduced the new Type Cover 2 colors for the Surface tablet. Microsoft also unveiled a docking station that includes a port for video output, three USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port, an Ethernet hookup and a 3.5mm audio jack.
The kickstand built into the device is redesigned to make it easier to use on laps. In the past, it worked best on a flat surface such as a table.

The tablets are available for pre-order on Sept. 24 and for purchase in select markets on Oct. 22. They ship with Microsoft's new Windows 8.1 operating system. The Surface 2 starts at US$449, while the Surface Pro 2 starts at US$899.
